WELCOME AND THANK YOU FOR VISITING THUMBHELP.COM!

This site is devoted to providing information about the digit- (thumb or finger) sucking behavior,
its influence on the general well being of children and HELP with a POSITIVE approach.

Digit sucking is a very normal infant activity that parents should not be concerned about. However, millions of children continue the behavior well beyond early childhood risking significant, numerous and often preventable problems costing billions in corrective therapies.

The prolonged sucking activity is a source of frustration and confusion to parents and professionals alike. Parents worry about dental and speech development as well as damage to their children's self-esteem because of negative comments about the digit sucking from almost everyone including peers, relatives, teachers, day-care providers and even total strangers. They wonder if their child is emotionally insecure or if they have done something wrong as parents. All too often, professionals dismiss parent's concern about their child's sucking habit as insignificant or, although well-intentioned, give them confusing or inadequate advice regarding the behavior. Appropriate and effective help is often very difficult to find.

The information contained on this site is not intended to stimulate anxiety or guilt in parents. You may not realize your child has a problem in the area of dental, speech, physical, learning or emotional development that has a direct relationship with protracted digit sucking. Please explore the various topics on the site map, and you will learn about the many aspects of the behavior, which will, hopefully, help you find a positive course of action that will benefit you and your child.
